Library

Library membership is free to anyone living on Cormorant Island. Our collection has over 6,700 books. In addition, you can access material from other public libraries in the Province through the Outlook Online program.

Our photo archives have over 7,000 digitized historic and contemporary photographs catalogued and available for public viewing. The catalogue is searchable by key words (year, subject, donor).

If you have historic or current photos of Alert Bay events or people, we would appreciate borrowing them to scan into our database.

Our archives also include a collection of newspapers published in Alert Bay from 1939-1941, 1951-1964 and the more recent North Island Gazette.

History

The Centennial Committee initiated the Library and Museum project to provide library services to the people of Cormorant Island. The Alert Bay Public Library and Museum Association became incorporated on July 27, 1958. The library has been serving the community ever since.

Our 331 library members, residents of Coromorant Island, borrow 3,500 items annually.

The Library and Museum is located in a historical waterfront building. This building was formerly the fire hall then the municipal office. Today the Library and Museum share the building with the Tourism Information Centre.

Free Public Internet Access

Thanks to community support, we offer free Internet access to the public. Half hour sessions. Drop by to do research, type your resume, or check your email.
