How to Access the List Archives:
All past messages which have been posted to the list by subscribers have been saved in the list archives. There are two search methods for accessing them.
Please note: You do not have to be a subscriber in order to access the list archives.
~ 1) Interactive Search (aka Searchable Archives). This method is the simplest and most straightforward, enabling you to search through all the messages posted in a particular year, using a keyword(s) search. Because the H-W-E list was established only in January 2000, there are no years to search prior to that date.
To search using this method, you must first must go to this URL: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=Huguenots-Walloons-Europe-L.
Then proceed as follows: Type in keyword(s) you want to look for. This can be a topic, a location, a name, an e-mail address, etc. Then click on Search. If your keyword is present in any list messages, a selection of subject lines for those messages will appear. Clicking on any particular subject line will bring up the entire message.
You can search the archives of any other list using this method. Go to: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi- bin/listsearch.pl. Type in name of list you want to search. Click on Submit Query, then proceed as above.
~ 2) Threaded Archives: This search uses two different approaches and is a little more complicated. You can search month-by-month with this method and the threading is the interesting feature. A thread in this case means a series of postings which are connected in some way, either chronologically or by the topic in the subject line.
You can go directly to the threaded archives for the H-W-E list at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/huguenots-walloons-europe. Click on the month you want to search. Next select which thread you want --
a) chronological thread: arranges the subject lines of all posts sent during that month into chronological order. If a subject line interests you, click on it to bring up rest of the message
b) thread index: arranges all posts according to the topic of the subject line, ie. those containing the same topic words are grouped together in what is called a thread.
Once you have used the threaded archives, you will see that it's important that a subject line reflect the actual content of the message. It can be very frustating to click on subject line after subject line in the archives, only to find that they have no connection to the content of the messages themselves.
For general information about threaded archives and how to use them, go to: http://archiver.rootsweb.com.You can also access the threaded archives of any other Rootsweb list through this site, by choosing the list you want alphabetically.
