John Calvin:

John Calvin, one of the key figures of the Protestant Reformation, was born in 1509 in Noyon, Picardy, France and died in 1564 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Originally a lawyer, Calvin dedicated his life to church reform. He was forced to flee from Paris to Switzerland c1535 but also spent several years in Strasbourg, Germany, which was a stronghold of the Reformation at that time. For many years, however, he lived in Geneva, writing religious commentaries as well as a book on Protestant doctrine. He also helped to establish a Reformed church there. As a result, Geneva became the most important centre of Protestant thought in 16th century Europe and many Protestant refugees fled there from other countries.
