~ The Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland, formerly the Huguenot Society of London, is located in London, England.

The Library website here: http://www.huguenotsociety.org.uk/library/ includes info about the Library itself as well as details about publications, sources and links, as well as accessing the Library or contacting the Librarian. The mailing address is also on this website (Note that it differs from the actual location of the Library.)

The Society Library is free for Society members but day readers (ie. non-members) may use the facility for a daily fee and by appointment only. If you are not a member of the Society and would like to visit the Library, please make arrangements well in advance. Contact the Society by post, e-mail or telephone for details.

The Library catalogue can be searched online at the Library URL above. Scroll down the page until you see the heading Access to the Library. The last paragraph of this section includes a link to the catalogue which is part of the eUCLid network for the University College of London.

The search feature allows you to browse the catalogue or to do a basic or advanced search. For example, using the basic search feature and typing in the keyword Huguenots results in a list of almost 1500 items with titles on a wide variety of Huguenot subjects, time periods and locations.

According to information obtained from the Society, the Huguenot Library holds "the most complete and valuable body of Huguenot literature in the UK" and much material that is not available elsewhere.

The Library holdings include:

~ the archives of the French Hospital ~ original manuscripts and rare books ~

~ unique collection of pamphlets, mainly of the 18th century ~

~ sets of hard-to-find periodicals of Huguenot societies throughout the world ~

~ books and publications of overseas Protestant societies ~

~ Wagner Collection of Huguenot pedigrees, will extracts, and other genealogical material ~

~ many privately produced family histories and papers ~

The Society itself has also published a large body of material, the two main collections being --

~ The Quarto series is a collection of historical monographs, started in 1887. It includes transcripts of many of the original registers of the Huguenot & Walloon churches in England. Also in this series is information relating to: poor relief, naturalization and denization, charities such as the French Protestant Hospital, to name just a few.

~ The Proceedings include a wide range of articles on aspects of Huguenot life, society, religion, immigration, economics, and other topics. There are also histories of Huguenot churches and communities, accounts of professions such as weavers, goldsmiths, and bookbinders, or of particular houses or areas, as well as family histories and biographies. In geographical area, they include not only London but other parts of the U.K. and overseas as well.
