How to post (send) a message to the list:

~ Please note: You must be a subscriber to post a message to the H-W-E mailing list. If you would like to join the list, please click here: subscribe.

If you are a new subscriber, you may want to just "listen in" on the list for a while, and not post anything yourself. In this way, you will get to know how the the list operates and to see what types of messages others are posting. In mailing list language, this is called lurking. But please don't lurk too long! You will benefit most from the list if you participate regularly by posting messages. As soon as you feel comfortable, let the rest of us know you're there by sending an introductory post. Remember, the rest of us won't know about you unless you post messages.

Here are step-by-step instructions on how to post to the list.

~ 1) Make sure your messages are written in plain text, with no attachments. Rootsweb will reject your messages if they are written in Enriched Text such as HTML (eg. fancy fonts or colours) or if messages have attachments. If you're not sure how to select the Plain Text option in your e-mail program, please contact the list administrator at: Huguenots-Walloons-Europe-admin@rootsweb.com.

~ 2) Before sending your first introductory message to the list, please read over the list guidelines. They will help you to make your message as effective as possible and will also let you know what standards are expected.

~ 3) Compose your message, mentioning known details about surnames, dates and/or locations. Surnames should be capitalized.. Locations should be specific, eg. include the country. Your message should focus primarily on Europe and/or UK and/or Ireland. Posts which are mostly or entirely about North American locations are not appropriate.

~ 4) Make your subject line specific by mentioning at least a surname or topic, and possibly a date/location as well. General subject lines such as "New subscriber" or "My surnames" are not helpful to others.

~ 5) When you are ready to post (send) your message to the list, address it to: Huguenots-Walloons-Europe-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent automatically to everyone on the list, including the list administrator. You will also receive a copy yourself. Other subscribers may then reply to you by sending their own message to the list, or they may contact you privately.

It is possible that you will receive no replies to your message. This is not because others aren't interested in what you have to say. More likely, it's because no one has any information to offer you. In this case, try not to become discouraged. Wait a few weeks, then try again by re-posting your information. It's recommended that subscribers re-send their information to the list at regular intervals (about once a month) or more often if you learn additional information. Remember that new subscribers are joining all the time so your info will be new to them.

~ 6) If you want to reply to a message which has been posted by another subscriber, you can choose to contact them privately (off-list). For example, sending personal notes, such as a thank-you, to the list is not appropriate. However, subscribers are encouraged to send their replies to the list if they have information to share which may be interesting or helpful to others.

When replying on the list to a previous post by another subscriber, it's important to: a) delete most or all of that previous post in your reply, b) make sure the subject line is still appropriate, changing it if necessary and c) place a short summary or <snip> of the previous message at the beginning of your reply, to let others know what you are talking about.
