The Canadian Association of Veterans
in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP)

Historical Background – Canada has been an active supporter of the UN since its formation in 1945, and more than 150,000 Canadians have participated on UN Peacekeeping Missions. CAVUNP, “the association” was started in 1986 in Toronto by Fred Brown and other peacekeeping veterans, who wanted to participate in public activities, to promote the recognition of UN Peacekeepers, serving and veteran. This association has been in the forefront of lobbying government for the CPSM medal, seeking health support systems through Veterans Affairs Canada, and other worthwhile support for those who are in need. The fledgling CAVUNP group received approval to use both the word Canadian and United Nations in our title, along with approval to use the UN emblem as part of our association’s identifier.

The MCpl Mark Isfeld Memorial Chapter
AKA: THE VICTORIA CHAPTER
Map
In April 12, 2000, five peacekeeping veterans sat around a kitchen table in Saanichton BC and with the permission of Brian and Carol Isfeld, to name this chapter after their son Mark, a courageous young Canadian who was killed, clearing land mines, in the Service of Peace in the former Yugoslavia.

Today we have over 59 members and we are active in the pursuit of

  • placing “The Peacekeeper, We will Remember Them” bronze plaques on the small town and municipal cenotaphs on Southern Vancouver Island.
  • We have delivered and will be delivering the new revised edition of Colonel Gardam’s Bi-lingual History Book “The Peacekeepers” to all schools throughout BC. These wonderful history books, to educate the youth on the roles and lives of peacekeepers.
  • We assist with the distribution of the Izzy dolls to children in the third world through servicing members of the various Missions.
  • We participate and assist in helping our charity –
  • ICROSS Canada (International Community for the Relief of Starvation and Suffering). For more information on ICROSS, please check www.icross.ca.

  • We liaise with the Royal Canadian Legion for poppy sales.
  • Participate in Remembrance Day, UN Day parades and other veterans activities.
  • Active participant with Veterans Affairs Canada Regional Meetings.

We have monthly meetings that are looked forward to by veterans and serving members, who work together to educate the public about peacekeeping. We are a pro-active chapter.
