UNITAR
POCI (UN Institute for Training and Research - Programme of Correspondence
Instruction)
Objectives:
United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) offers
16 different distance-learning courses in UN peacekeeping. Five
more courses are planned for 2002. These courses can be taken individually
or combined into a "Certificate-of-Training in United Nations
Peace Support Operations".
The
certificate programme is offered through a consortium that includes
The United Nations Institute For Training and Research Programme
of Correspondence Instruction (UNITAR POCI), The United Nations
Department of Peacekeeping Operations, and several world-known universities
and peacekeeping training centres. The certificate-granting programme
of study integrates classroom training with the self-paced correspondence
courses offered by UNITAR POCI. In addition, completion of the programme
requires the student to submit an original written research thesis
on an approved aspect of peacekeeping. The programme is conducted
at a college level but it is not intended to be a degree-granting
academic programme. Completion of the programme results in a professional
Certificate-of-Training in Peace Support Operations, not an academic
degree.

The
Center for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance
The
Center for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance undertakes
education, training and research in the areas of disaster management
and humanitarian assistance and civil-military cooperation with
a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. The CDMHA seeks to build
partnerships with nations, NGOs and other key disaster management
organizations to help increase operational readiness in order to
meet the diverse humanitarian needs of that area.
The
CDMHA is also dedicated to the transfer of new knowledge and appropriate
technology through the university sector to improve responsiveness
during times of crisis. By facilitating, underwriting and co-sponsoring
activities such as educational course development, conferences and
