Effects Brain Injury affects each person differently, however, symptoms may be very similar even though the cause was in no way similar. This is because similar functioning areas of the brain have been affected or damaged. Frequently, multiple injuries complicate the healing process. Some survivors may need to re-learn basic skills and/or need to overcome behavioral difficulties. Whatever the case my be, people with brain injury usually face a long and difficult challenge attempting to regain physical, cognitive and social skills. When BRAIN INJURY OCCURS ASK THESE QUESTIONS Is an operation necessary? TESTS: What tests will be done and what are they likely to show? SEIZURES: Are they likely to happen? What can I do if they occur? REHABILITATION: What programs are available? COUNSELLING: Will it be necessay ? Where is it available? RESIDENCE: When will the person be allowed to come home? What over choices are available in the community? DRIVING: Can the person drive again and where is retesting available? PERSONALITY: What cahnages will there be in thinking, feeling and behavior? WORK: Will the person be able to return to work ? Brain Injury can also be caused by: insufficient blood flow to various parts of the brain Severe whiplash: the brain "floats" loosely in the skull and gets shaken around voilently Hypoxia: insufficient oxygen to the brain Anoxia: lack of oxygen to the brain "Shaken baby" symdrome: can effect the brain just like a severe whiplash Use of "street" drugs: certain chemicals used to "cut" the drugs can effect the brain Sniffing solvents: some people sniff chemicals like glue, paint, and solvents in order to get a high. But this high does not come from any intoxicating effect, but instead it is from hypoxia. Prolonged solvent sniffing can and will cause brain damage.
