...live, travel and work together. Their home base is on a small island
on the coast of British Columbia, Canada. In 1986, when Maria was spending
a year here on a teacher's exchange from Britain and Dag was doing research
towards his doctorate in veterinary medicine, they met and fell in love.
Subsequently, they not only exchanged wedding vows but also pledged to
lead an adventurous life together. Leaving their secure careers and their
pension funds behind, they embarked on an exciting life of travel and exploration.
They have traveled the world by means of kayaks, sailing vessels, bicycles
and on foot and have worked on different continents guiding groups, teaching,
practicing veterinary medicine and developing adventure travel destinations.
Over the years they have gained a solid reputation in their respective
creative pursuits, writing and photography, and have become very popular
kayak guides.
Dag
grew up in Canada, the USA and Germany. Throughout his teenage years and
veterinary training, he devoted much of his time to the things he is still
passionate about today: outdoor pursuits, travel and photography. Returning
to Canada in 1985, he realized that Vancouver Island, with its majestic
scenery, was the place he would call home. He met Maria, fell in love and
sealed the bond by buildng two kayaks which they still use to commute from
their small island to the nearest town. |
Maria
grew up in England. She has always been drawn to adventurous people, and
for some years was the partner of Joe Tasker, a world class British mountaineer
who died on Everest in 1982. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Maria moved
to Canada to begin a new life. She swapped her teaching job for a
career as a writer and, in what she describes as 'my biggest stroke of
luck' she met Dag Goering, and has been exploring the world with him ever
since. |
