Europa Club History.
The Port Alberni Europa Club got its start in February 1974, with the help of Mr. and Mrs. John Wirtz. The purpose of the club was to bring together the emigrants and traditions of Europe.
Annual public dances and private club functions were set up for the entire year. "Carnival", a German celebration was the first dance. Tulipfest celebrates the Dutch traditions. A shooting contest is held each spring at the Rifle Range. This is open to the public. The top scores decide the Schuetzen King and Queen, who are crowned at the Schuetzenfest Dance. Club Members attend the Annual Picnic during the summer. Fall gets a good start with the Harvest Dance.Followed by the largest and best Oktoberfest on Vancouver Island, B.C. , where all the members are involved.
A private Christmas Dinner for Club members only and a Dance open to the public is held in early December.
The Europa Club also participates in the Fall Fair Parade. Float themes are based on different countries or traditions represented in the Club Membership. Many times the floats have won prizes.
Generous donations are made every year to different organizations like the Salvation Army , Bread of Life, Pioneer Tower and the SPCA.
An average of 55 people represent the Europa Club.
New Members are always welcome.
