This is a utility site to download documents related to the Economic Evaluation of Coral Reef Management funded under the World Bank Research Committee from 1995 to 1999. Some of these documents are available in text format, while others are available in a standardized 'PDF' format. To read PDF files, you will need Adobe Acrobat, which is available through http://www.adobe.com/ as a free download. If your browser has a PDF-compatible plug-in, you can read the documents directly.

About the Projects

The work summarized at this site commenced under World Bank Research Committee funding in 1995, under projects RPO#680-08 and RPO#682-22. Two streams of research involving cost effectiveness modeling and marine system valuation were initiated, both focusing on coral reef systems in the developing tropics. Empirical work focused on the Montego Bay Marine Park in Jamaica, and was completed in March 1999.

The cost effectiveness analysis work develops integrated economic and ecological models, relying extensively on fuzzy logic procedures to model dose response relationships within the reef environment. This site provides final reports and results prepared by Jack Ruitenbeek, Mark Ridgley, Steve Dollar and Richard Huber in support of this effort.

The marine system valuation work provides economic valuations of coral reefs, demonstrating the use of different modeling methods, and treating key policy issues within this context. This site provides final reports and results for the full marine system valuation project, including empirical valuation results for local uses (Gustavson 1998), a contingent valuation survey (Spash et al. 1998), and a valuation of marine pharmaceutical bioprospecting (Ruitenbeek and Cartier 1999). Also, Cartier and Ruitenbeek (1999) provide a comprehensive literature review of valuation results and methods relevant to marine system valuation. Other background papers available include a socio-economic assessment of the Montego Bay Marine Park area (Bunce and Gustavson 1998) and institutional studies relating to bioprospecting in Jamaica (Putterman 1998). Finally, a comprehensive dissemination strategy is outlined by Richard Huber, World Bank Task Team Leader for these projects.
