| Hornby Island
is situated on Canada's west coast in the Straight of Georgia between
the mainland of British Columbia and Vancouver Island, approximately
4 hours travel by car and ferry from the city of Vancouver. The
island offers spectacular natural beauty, contrasting pastoral serenity
with a rugged and untamed landscape. It is five miles in diameter,
creating a shoreline that varies between the splendor of rock bluffs
cascading into the ocean, to expansive white sand beaches.
The interior of the island is mountainous and covered in temperate
rain forest, abundant with deer, bald eagles, raven and many other
birds. No dangerous wild animals live on Hornby Island. The reefs
and outer rocks are home to sea lions, seals, otters, and numerous
sea birds including the rare Harlequin
Duck. These waters are also home to whales and porpoises, the largest
and most colorful inhabitants of this area.
South Wind Retreat derives its name from the south wind that prevails
on the south east coast of Hornby Island. The property is on 19
secluded acres overlooking the ocean. In the distance one can see
Texeda Island and the mainland mountains or view the sun rise and
the moon over water. Star gazing is a phenomenal experience since
the area is free of light pollution.
Hornby Island offers exceptional access to the ocean for sport and
pleasure, including fishing; boating; sailing; kayaking; scuba diving;
and swimming. The island has numerous networks of walking, hiking,
biking, and mountain biking trails. The beaches and highlands are
all open to the public. In addition, a wide range of cultural events
are always happening - concerts, dances, movies, and art shows of
many types.
