Our location and its surroundings:

We are located on Malcolm Island, about three kilometers from theferry dock in Sointula on the southeast side, facing Cormorant Islandacross the Broughton Strait. Malcolm Island is strategicallylocated in the southern Queen Charlotte Strait, athwart the entryinto the Johnston Strait. From our beach it is only a few hourspaddle to Blackfish Sound and Robson Bight, famous for Orcaviewing. However, Malcolm Island is also the jumping-off pointinto the Broughton Archipelago, with its hundreds of islands, channels, fjords, sea water lagoons, lakes, tidal rapids, and amultitude of adventures. The eastern end of the island leadsdirectly into the glacier-framed Knights Inlet, a sight rivallingLake Louise, but without the tourist crowds.Paddling northwest, the kayaker heads out to Cape Scott, and on amore northerly course, toward the wilderness of the mid-coast.

Sointula is a charming small fishing village, with a selection of Bed & Breakfast operations, a small hotel, a couple ofrestaurants, and a local museum. On Cormorant Island, a one hourpaddle by kayak, is the U'Mista museum with its famous collectionof potlach regalia. On Malcolm Island numerous logging roads and trails provide for comfortable day hikes. There are several placesto camp, too. For the painter and photographer there is abundantwildlife, though no bears, cougars, or wolves to fear. The mainland with its majestic snow covered mountains, and the northernranges of Vancouver Island are a delight to the eye. The climateis mild without extremes. Even the rainfall is moderate. Inshort, Malcolm Island is the ideal jumping off point for thewilderness kayaker, and a delightful vacationing spot for thefriend and family that does not quite share the enthusiasm forkayaking.
