Forestry Tours

One of the stops on your tour will be the Beaver Lake Ecology Trail. On this forest walk we will show you many different types and areas of temperate rainforest that are found on the North Island:

Ancient Forest – See a typical western red cedar / western hemlock forest and learn the importance of its attributes and how we manage it.
Older Natural Second Growth – Compare the ancient forest to a young forest initiated after a natural disaster.
Managed Forest – See how young forests are managed to improve wood quality and concurrently improve wildlife habitat.

Lunch at scenic Beaver Lake will recharge you for the rest of your journey through the woods

Other stops on your tour may include:

Viewing of different Sivicultural Techniques
Fish Hatchery – a visit to Marble River Hatchery to see Salmonid Enhancement
Active Harvesting – see the fallers at work and the machines/equipment used for logging
Riparian or Streamside Habitat Enhancement Sites – impovement of fish/wildlife habitat
Dryland Sort – view the huge machinery handling the logs

Tours - start from the North Island Discovery Center and will last approximately 6 hours.

All of the above features may not be available on every tour due to limited time and location of some active harvesting operations. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the outdoors, and bring your own picnic lunch. Please inform your guide of any disabilities or difficulties with walking.
