2000 Tofino Kayaking School Calendar of Courses
Interest in sea-kayaking has grown substantially over the years and outdoor enthusiasts have greater need to develop skills in safe paddling, basic seamanship, marine weather interpretation and knowledge of the ocean environment. From protected waters with moderate currents and tides to open ocean swell and surf, Clayoquot Sound offers ideal locations for all levels of skill development. Our sea-kayaking courses are designed for those interested in learning sea-kayaking basics or improving their skill level, as well as for those who intend to be responsible for others on the water, whether as professional or recreational paddlers. Certificates of completion are given at the end of each course.
The Tofino Sea-Kayaking School is recognized for the excellent quality of individual instruction incorporated into our programs. The ratio of instructor to participant in the advanced and intermediate courses is one to four. ensuring maximum individualized attention. To ensure the highest standard, we are expanding our resources by linking with other noted teaching professionals and well-established and respected kayaking schools. the Leadership Course will be run with Ecomarine and our Surf and Currents Weedends will be offered in collaboration with both Ecomarine and Ocean River Sports.
STARTING OUT - Beginner Courses
Basics Weekender -- Introduction to Sea-Kayaking
This comprehensive program gives you the skills necessary to begin kayak touring in safety and with appropriate confidence. Our professional instructors are sensitive to the challenges of learning. Small group size will ensure that they can respond directly to your needs. The course covers equipment, paddling strokes, exit & re-entry techniques, tide and current interpretation, chart-reading & basic navigation. The 'week-enders' launch from Tofino and following the day's instruction you paddle to Vargas Island for a night at the Vargas Inn. Here you can enjoy a beach sauna following the afternoon rescues session. Wet suits are provided for this exercise. Food and accomodation are included in the cost.

Coastal Touring In the Wild -- and -- Wimmin Seeking Wild
These six day courses are an opportunity to learn and apply Basics skills while touring in coastal wilderness. In addition to the Basics skills these programs will guide you in menu-selection, packing of boats for extended tours, route-planning, weather forecasting basics, camp selection, navigation by piloting and technical stroke improvement. Judgement and seamanship skills are emphasized throughout these programs.

Surf and Currents Weekends
This course is guaranteed to boost your confidence and skill in handling waves and waves can be fun! On the first day you will learn to lean, brace and turn your kayak quickly; theories of tidal currents will be explained and then we'll practise ferrying and using moving water to advantage. The day will conclude with a rescue practise session. On the second day we'll head for the beach and you'll progressively learn surfing techniques and the art of riding surf waves. Fun and exhilarating, this course is great for those who think they would like to play in the surf. It is also essential for those who intend to do any open coast paddling where you must judge how to negotiate or avoid surf landings. This knowledge will also increase skills in observation of coastal conditions and will improve paddling skills in rough seas.

For aspiring professional guides and those who intend to be responsible for others on the water, this course is an excellent opportunity to learn and apply safe leadership skills in the outdoor classroom of Clayoquot Sound. This comprehensive course covers: strokes, rescues, tides and currents, rolling and surf paddling, marine weather forecast and interpretation, navigation and route finding, camp selection and minimum impact techniques, equipment and clothing, safety, leadership and ethics.
Three nights in roofed accomodations are followed by six days in the field. We'll use a combination of single and double kayaks. This is a pro-active, participatory course featuring low student/ instructor ratios and maximum learning opportunities. . The course meets or surpasses industry standards and assessments will be provided at the end to participants. Pre-requisites. Call early for application.
