If you are missing a pet, please phone us at 248-3811 between the hours of 9 and 5, Monday through Saturday. And please don't delay! Every year, many pets go missing-here are some tips should one of them happen to be yours. First, your pets must wear identification which includes collars with up to date ID tags for cats and dogs and current licences for dogs. However, as these collars can fall off or be removed, it is also important to have your pet tattooed, which can be done for a minimal charge while your pet is being spayed or neutered, or microchipped. Microchipping requires no anesthetic,is as simple as a vaccination, and provides permanent identification that can be scanned if the pet arrives at an animal shelter or animal care facility. Even a pet who never goes outside or never leaves the yard needs to wear identification. If your pet should go missing, it is important to check the inside of your home-some pets get stuck behind the dryer, find their way into the crawlspace or attic, or get locked in a closet! Next, check your sheds and garages and in the case of cats, trees. If you still have not located Fifi or Fluffy, phone the local SPCA/ animal shelter/pound and file missing reports. You should then plan to visit the shelter(s) every two to three days just in case your pet arrives there and is not matched with the report. Post notices, preferably with a photograph, around your neighbourhood (mailboxes are an excellent place) and at the shelter and talk to all of your neighbours and ask them to check their sheds and garages. And of course, walk around your entire neighbourhood and wherever you frequently walk your dog. Try not to lose hope-some pets, especially those with tattoos or microchips-have been reunited with their owners after three or four months, and some even longer! |
