"LEG CAT" aka Querida

This summer we received a kitty in terrible condition. She had apparently been left behind by a previous tenant and was wearing a small leather collar, intended to be used on dogs. At some point she got one of her front legs caught through the collar and must have remained in this state for quite some time. She was immediately taken to the vet who had never seen anything like this--he felt the leg must have been stuck for several weeks due to the nerve damage and loss of use--the poor kitty have no movement in any of the joints of the leg. Prognosis for saving the leg was poor and it was suggested that we attempt physiotherapy on the leg in an attempt to save it. We felt fairly certain the leg would require amputation (which would be rather costly) and we sent her to another vet to have a look. She concurred that we should attempt a strict regiment of physiotherapy--something that was really only going to be possible in a foster home. The story, and the need for a special foster home, hit the newspaper and right away an animal loving couple from Nanaimo, who already had one special needs kitty, phoned and requested the opportunity to foster the kitty. And not too long after that we learned that the leg was doing very well and the foster people decided to adopt her! Now named "Querida", she is quite happy and things just could not have turned out better for her!

MYKAH

Mykah was originally left at our front gate one night with a brief note indicating only his name and his age. We found him to be quite delightful and placed him up for adoption after his "stray" holding period. Then we waited patiently for somebody to choose him as their own. We waited and waited and waited! Our theory was that people were concerned because he had pitbull in him. Our dog walking / training volunteers all loved him and spent lots of time training him how to be the perfect dog. And still we waited! Then our head office asked us for a pet to feature on Pet on the Net, a feature at the BCSPCA site that gets pets even more recognition than our own site. It was unanymous--Mykah would be featured. And we waited! It wasn't until the week after he was featured that somebody called. They had been watching him on our website, then saw him as Pet on the Net, but it wasn't until they saw the Pet on the Net update which listed Mykah as still needing a home that they decided to come over from Vancouver to see him. It didn't take long for him to steal their hearts and now he is the best dog ever! We knew he was all along!!

NERVOUS NELLIE

This little sweetie came by the shelter for a visit on January 24th--she is one of the 57 poodles that ended up at the Nanaimo SPCA and were then transferred to other shelters. While her people feel that she will never be a "normal" dog, they are quite happy with her progress as she is now housetrained and can also manage the stairs in their home! It is quite apparent that little Nellie loves her new life as a cherished pet!
