Suzanne Trevis - THE RECORD

The first things to great us as we came through the door were the huge propane heaters. I had to giggle. Bet you don't see too many of these in the city. Out here, some things never change. We made sure we had one right next to our table.

I'd offered to go down and help out with the Historical Society's table at the Trade Fair. I was really looking forward to it as it more or less meant sitting and yakking with folks about all the old pictures. Who we still knew, who's house it was in a picture taken in 1967. You know the stuff. But as usual my life was chaos and when I remembered it was trade fair weekend I was smack in the middle of moving my office (i.e. my house is a total disaster) and I had people coming for dinner the next day.

But I went. Mostly because for once it was one of those volunteer jobs you really don't mind, and it gave me a couple of hours of sanity, whether I needed it or not!

I had a great time. Lorraine and I got most of the stuff put out, scrounging an extra table for all of the many photos we have for display. And during the fair I sorted through a box of old newspaper clippings that we really need to get in an album. This is my favourite part.

There were a number of clippings from the winter of 1968. We sure had a lot of snow that year. Debbie Fairhurst brought her kids and her husband back from their hockey game to see Dad bundled up and playing in the snow when he was five. There were pictures of Shannon Messer winning the Miss Gold River pageant, Jan Selzler (Norman) squaring off with the umpire in some ball tournament and numerous photos of streets and houses most of us had a hard time recognizing. There were photos of the slide on the mill road, the first I had seen although I knew about it. We joked about the price of houses listed in the original package from Tahsis Company. And half the people who stopped commented that "we have a set of glasses just like those at home!" Original Tahsis Co. issue.

It was great. I ended up staying at least an hour and a half past the time I'd given myself and paid for it later. But it was worth it.

It might not have been very productive but it did my psyche a world of good and gave me all kinds of ideas, as soon as I get time to sit and sort it all out!
