At Hollyhock this year: Pure nature of Mind

Each year, Geshe-la conducts an intensive retreat at Hollyhock on Cortes Island.  In two sessions per day, Geshe-la instructs on the importance of purifying and healing the mind in order to recognize its true nature and ultimately attain Enlightenment.

Lama's teachings will be primarily in Tibetan, with translation provided by Lama Thubten Jhampa, who is an Acarya Geshe in the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born near Sakya in Tibet and, following the Chinese annexing of Tibet, fled to India and attended the Sakya College in Rajpur. He currently resides in Seattle Washington, where he translates for H.E. Dagchen Rinpoche. He also translates for Sakya Jetsunma Chime Luding of Richmond, B.C., sister of HH Sakya Trizin, throne holder of the Sakya Sect. He has previously translated for Lama Tashi, who holds him in high esteem for his knowledge.

Participants will learn how negative thinking creates suffering and how it can be overcome.  They will learn to manage anger; to see difficult situations as an opportunity to practice what they have learned; to calm and concentrate the mind and generate joy.

From the Hollyhock catalogue:

This fall, Lama Tashi Namgyal celebrates more than 20 years of bringing wisdom and humour to Hollyhock. In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of mental development, the retreat focuses on instruction for understanding the nature of mind, recognizing and dealing with the causes of suffering, and acting from this awareness in daily life. The transformative power of Tibetan Buddhist meditation can bring compassion, generosity, healing, and resolution to ourselves and to the world. The retreat includes daily meditation sessions and instruction.

There is no instructor fee for this retreat. Donations may be made directly to the teachers.

Registration: $195 CDN, $171 US (meals & accommodation extra), 5 nights.

This year's teachings will be held from September 1 to 6, 2006. For more information, or to register, contact Hollyhock at 1-800-933-6339.
