The Sakya tradition, one of the four major religious traditions in Tibet, rose to play a significant role in the development and spread of the new Tantras that came to Tibet in the 11th century. During the 13th and 14th centuries, the holders of the Sakya tradition also held the principal ruling political power in Tibet. The Sakya political stature gradually declined over the centuries, but its unique religious tradition continued to flourish and is now vibrantly present in many other parts of the world.
