"A venue of choice" says Buster Productions

"The Old Church rules!" says one of the performers

There have been many exciting events that have happened at the Old Church Theatre in the past years. Here are a few examples of cultural events that have taken place in this venue.

  • Buster Productions have brought in internationally acclaimed artists: Canada's Laurie Thain. New York's dobro/fiddle master, Stacy Phillips and guitarist Paul Howard; Blues Greats, Ken Hamm, Rick Bockner and Tim Williams, and other great Blues artists.
    YEAR 2000 & 2001

  • February 2001, J.P. Cormier - A brilliant artist on fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo as well as vocal. Opening the show was Comox Valley favourite Richard Caissie.

  • December, Co-Val Choristers' Christmas 2000 - "Journey of Hope" A multi-media Christmas Show that was filled with fun, choral music in conjunction with pictures from the past and present - directed by Beryl Regier.

  • June, 2000 Pat Pantuso's 23rd Annual Dance Recital - including Tap and Stage Dancing.

  • June, 2000 Sugar 'n Spice - Classical ballet and Jazz dancing - presented by Courtenay School of Dance.

  • May, 2000 Dance Explosion 2000- Highland and Jazz dancing - presented by Laurie Tinkler Dancers.

  • May, 2000, Sylvia by A.R. Gurney - presented by Courtenay Little Theatre, directed by Tony Arnold.

  • May, 2000, Richard Wood, Celtic Fiddler and his trio - presented by Off The Couch Productions and the Comox Valley Celtic Society.

  • April and May 2000, My Fair Lady - a first rate and classic musical. An adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. Presented by Co-Val Choristers.


    YEAR 1999

  • September, 1999, Off theCouch by Courtenay Little Theatre

  • September, 1999, A Celebration of Nepal - A multi-media show by Tom Carter.

  • June 1999, 22nd Year Dance Recital by Pat Pantuso's School of Dance - Primarily tap, irish and stage dance. 155 performers from age 5 to 75 of both male and female.

  • June 1999, Sugar 'n Spice VIII by Courtenay School of Dance -- Dance mix '99 consists of ballet, jazz, lyrical, african and hip-hop dances.

  • May 1999, Dance Explosion '99 by Laurie Tinkler Dancers - a concentration of Highland and Jazz dancing with a variety of other types and styles of dances.

  • May 1999, 2 - One Act Plays by Denman Island Theatre Conspiracy. "Weed" an original written by Brian Payton, a Denman Island Resident -- a drama which explores some relationship issues on a trip. "The Bald Soprano" written by Eugene Lonesco --an Absurdist Classic is a comic drama.

  • May 1999, Courtenay Little Theatre presented If We Were Women. A play for anyone who has a mother. Guess what folks...! This play written by a Canadian, Joanna McLean Glass, is about relationships between three generations.

  • The 1999 spring production, the musical comedy Two by Two presented by Co-Val Choristers through special arrangements with the Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatre Library, New York. Music by Richard Rodgers. Book by Richard Stone. Lyrics by Martin Charnin. Based on the play "The Flowering Peach" by Clifford Odets -- was an exciting, colourful, fun and moving story of current human, internal, societal and spiritual conflicts centered around Noah building the ark to save earth's creatures.

  • February 1999, Co-Val Choristers presented two fun evenings The Trumpeter Swan, where part of the benefits went toward The Swan Society.

    YEAR 1998

  • In December 1998 the Co-Val Choristers under the direction of Beryl Regier presented a choral Christmas production Remember December.A vibrant and colourful evening consisting of secular and spiritual Christmas music incorporated in to the context of the evening "The Snow Queen."

    Many other events have taken place also:

  • Ethnic origins, such as First Nations, Tibetan Monks and Filipino wedding.

  • Seventy enthusiastic youth between the ages of 5 and 18 years filled the stage as Rainbow Theatre presented the love story Music Man.

  • An evening with Dee Daniels, hosted by the Mac Woods Society. With a vocal range of four octaves Dee Daniels entertained a packed house with everything from blues to soul music, be-bop, jazz and gospel.

  • Sylvan Drums from New South Wales, Australia.

  • In December for 12 evenings and two matinees, the Co-Val Choristers under the direction of Beryl Regier presented a choral Christmas production Take Time for Christmas.

    Francophone Folk Fun with Angele Arsenault and accompanist Charles Johnson in mid-March, 1998. A warm mix of music, from the sad history of Acadian expulsions to the hand-clapping and toe-tapping fun of familiar folk tunes.

  • Internationally renown vocalist Joëlle Rabu. Along with the band: Douglas Dodd on piano; Charlie Knowles, bass and mandocello and Tom Neville, violin, they were able to dazzle the audience with expression of emotion, soul and their array of musical genres.

  • Lake Trail Junior Secondary School's theatre production The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe.

  • The spring production, 1998, the classic musical Brigadoon by Co-Val Choristers was an exciting, colourful and moving love story set in the magical village of Scotland.

  • Nova Voce Youth Choir.

  • Swiss Choir on International Tour, Choeur de mon Coeur -- Choir of my Heart. An evening with 70 energetic young adults filled the stage singing with vibrant quality a variety of choral music.

  • A Dog's Chance Society -- Fringe Festival.

  • Fashion Show Metamorphosis by the Second Chance Thrift Shop.

  • August, 1998, Mowgli and Tales from the Rainforest by Rainbow Youth Theatre
