The Victoria Choral Society is Greater Victoria's leading symphonic chorus. Formed in 1934, the choir was created from a group of 200 singers who represented most of the churches of the day in Victoria. They had assembled for the purpose of singing Messiah, but agreed to continue existence for purposes of promoting choral music. A newspaper headline complimented the choir for being able to bring diverse members together for a single purpose a love of singing with others.
Over the past seventy one years, this vibrant ensemble has flourished under the capable leadership of several well-known music directors, including Michael Gormley, Brian Jackson and Bruce More. Last year, the VCS was delighted to welcome Giuseppe (Joey) Pietraroia as our new Music Director. He also holds appointments as conductor-in-residence of both the Victoria Symphony and Pacific Opera Victoria. Joey infuses the choir with the joy of performing challenging repertoire at the highest level of performance quality.

The choir has sung with such renowned artists as Susan Platts and Richard Margison. Recent collaborations include concerts with the Victoria Symphony, Elmer Iseler Singers, CapriCCio Vocal Ensemble, and the Victoria Children's Chorus.
The Choral Society offers an ever-expanding repertoire of choral music to Victoria audiences. Recent performances include Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, Verdi's Requiem, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, Beethoven's 9th (Choral) Symphony, Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Fanshaw's African Sanctus, Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, and Faure's Requiem.
This season, the VCS continues its long tradition of choral excellence, beginning with its traditional production of Messiah with the Victoria Symphony. Later in the year the choir then presents its own concerts in mid-winter and mid-spring.
The VCS is a registered non-profit society governed by an elected Board. Current membership is eighty, including soprano, alto, tenor, bass, and baritone sections. Singers are auditioned. New members are accepted for the start of each season in September, although with the permission of the music director a singer may be accepted for membership at mid-season.
Building on 72 years of choral excellence and strong community service, we invite you to actively experience the joy of choral music with us!
